Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my golf course needs renovating?

Several signs indicate the need for renovation, including deteriorating turf conditions, declining membership or visitor numbers, the need to remain competitive; increased maintenance costs because of outdated or worn-out design features.  A professional assessment can provide a comprehensive evaluation.

What are the key benefits of renovating or restoring a golf course?

Renovating or restoring an existing golf course will improve the life span of existing golf features, attract more players, maintain existing ones, and improve overall playing conditions. It often leads to increased revenue, higher property values, and a better golfing experience, which can positively impact your business.

What is a typical process involved in a golf course renovation project?

A typical process for a golf course renovation project involves several key stages:

Initial Assessment: Begin with a thorough evaluation of the golf facility.
Long-Range Planning: This phase addresses issues identified during the assessment and explores opportunities for improvement, resulting in a conceptual plan.
Implementation and Phasing Strategies: Establish a plan for executing the project in well-defined phases.
Budgeting Estimates: Providing estimated budgets to guide capital allocations.
Detailed Design: Creating buildable designs that align with the chosen phasing sequences.
Construction Implementation: Overseeing the construction process to ensure quality and compliance with design.
Post-Construction Evaluation: After completion, we evaluate the project's success and gather client feedback for continuous improvement.

What's the typical timeline for a golf course renovation project?

The timeline varies depending on the scope of work, however, here are additional factors to take into consideration:  duration of the golf season; efficiency of grouping projects together; how many holes must remain open for play; size of the course; weather conditions; permits and regulatory agencies and availability of resources.    For example, in a four-season climate a bunker renovation of 50-60 bunkers starting April 1 can be completed in 3-4 months, inclusive of irrigation.   Specific timelines will become apparent during the planning phase.  Generally, a renovation can take anywhere from several months to a year or more.

How do you balance preserving the course’s history while making necessary improvements?

This is a delicate balance. It is crucial to determine whether a course’s historical lineage is worthy of preserving. If feasible, carefully research the course’s history, consult historical records, acquire older air photography to track physical changes in the course, speak to long time patrons of the course and work closely with stakeholders to ensure that renovations respect and enhance its historical features.

What is your approach to long-range planning for a golf course renovation project?

Our approach to long-range planning for a golf course renovation project begins with a thorough understanding of both the client and the course itself. This process involves a series of client engagements where we discuss their goals and desires. Ideally, a golf course facility should be asking itself where it wants to be in 5 years and 10 years.

We take course tours with the superintendent and involve course and grounds committees to explore existing problems and uncover opportunities. From these engagements, a conceptual plan takes shape. Subsequently, we move into the next stage of the process, which includes creating detailed project timelines, forecasting budgets, and initiating phased construction.

“I enjoy that Cam is not afraid to be constructively critical of club improvements and as such imparts an honesty and professionalism that can be lacking in today’s business world”

Typically, what services does a golf architect provide?

Comprehensive services, including securing base mapping, site analysis, conceptual/master planning, budget forecasting, assistance in securing permitting and regulatory compliance, detail design, construction oversight, and post-renovation evaluation to ensure the project's success.

What factors should I consider when selecting a golf course architect for the project?

Look for an architect who has a history of relationship building; uses the intrinsic characteristics a site possesses in a responsible manner; an architect with a proven track record of successful renovations; experience in creating sustainable designs, and a good understanding of your vision and budget. Listening, clear communication, references, and a portfolio are key factors to consider.

Can you explain your fee structure for golf course renovation projects?

Our fee structure for a golf course renovation project is determined by several key factors, such as the project's scope, complexity, and the specific services needed. We provide detailed proposals that break down all associated costs.

For the initial stages, such as Conceptual and Master Planning, Budgeting and Phasing for an 18-hole course, the fee typically falls in the range of $20,000 to $35,000. The exact cost within this range depends on factors like the extent of stakeholder engagement and communication with the membership.

As the project progresses beyond the conceptual stage and moves towards implementation, we present a detailed proposal outlining the services required for each defined scope. The proposal will provide a clear breakdown of costs tailored to the project's unique requirements.

What kind of budget should we plan for a golf course renovation or restoration project?

Budgets vary widely based on project scope.  Construction estimates flow from an agreed upon master or long-range plan.  Considerable time should be allocated to budgeting.  Once an overall budget is estimated, a course then begins to allocate appropriate capital to address the selected projects to work on. Keep in mind that a well-planned renovation is an investment that can lead to long-term financial benefits

How can we ensure that the renovation project doesn't disrupt daily operations?

Effective project management and scheduling are key. Ensure a collaborative approach between architect, contractor, and golf committee to create a phased plan that minimizes disruption to play, with clear communication to members and guests.  In the northeast part of North America, shoulder seasons can be ideal for more significant renovations.  Summer work, although disruptive, may yield the most competitive pricing from contractors.

What can we do to make the renovated golf course environmentally sustainable?

Identify opportunities to reduce resource consumption in conjunction with fewer inputs; allow for the flourishing of sunlight, air circulation and natural drainage patterns.  Practice efficient irrigation distribution and recognize turf moisture thresholds, selection of site-specific turf species for drought tolerance, hardiness, and native plant selection for landscaping in non-playing areas.
